Switch is an improvised performance recorded directly to a 2-track tape. It is based on sequences of patterns that gradually shift over time, each one playing different sounds--some simple, others complex (I used a typical range of electronic waveforms such as sine waves and square waves, as well as percussive samples). All these sounds are then manipulated over time with filters and delays. For the organization of the patterns I created "mini-sequencers" which were synchronized with Max (pre-Ableton Live!) The process of composing Canción de Andrea is similar, though it is stripped down. Instead of Max, I used a regular MIDI sequencer to trigger the sounds, which are also passed through a delay and then overdubbed onto a multitrack tape recorder. Canción de Cuna was programmed entirely in the computer. Both the score and the sounds were generated with Csound, a software language for composition, sound synthesis and processing.
